In a series of upcoming blogs I will take a deep dive in the installation and functionality of the new HP infrastructure management platform for the Converged Infrastructure being HP Oneview.
Unlike HP SIM, which needs a Windows or Linux server to be installed on, Oneview is a virtual machine that can be downloaded as a ready2use appliance. This virtual appliance can be installed on any ESXi host.
Get the software
The software can be downloaded from the Oneview homepage www.hp.com/go/oneview or thru this direct link:

The full binary .OVA file (6,3GB) is the one you need to import in your VMware console via “Deploy OVF template”.
Notice that also a .BIN file is available. This file is needed when you installed the initial version 1.0 and want to upgrade to the latest version (when publishing this article) 1.01.
I suggest also downloading and reading the 2 PDF files, they hold useful tips on installing and configuring Oneview.
Requirements
VMware host 5 or higher (No Hyper-V yet)
Static IP address
DNS and PTR records created
2 vCPU and 8GB memory free (sizing depends of # of monitored devices, this is the minimum)
The latest browsers are supported (IE9 & 10, Firefox 14+, Chrome 21+), no Safari or Opera.
Installation
After having downloaded the software and imported the OVA file, deploy the VM and check the IP address of the virtual machine.
Open a supported browser and go to this IP address to start the First Time Setup Wizard. You can do this also thru the vSphere console.
This picture shows the Startup and Initialization screen inside the vSphere Client.
Click Agree on the Oneview License page.
Here you can choose to enable or disable Application Support by HP support personnel.
The HP Support Access Opt-In is used for HP Support remote access when the appliance is in an unhealthy state, and core services cannot start. By opting out, this disables also the ability to reset the appliance Administrator account password if ever lost.
Finally you will arrive on the Login page.
Default credentials for this appliance are
username Administrator
password admin
You will be requested directly to change the default password with a self-selected (and more secure) password.
After having changed the password, you will be prompted to set the networking details of the appliance:
– Appliance Hostname
– IPv4 address (Static or DHCP with static reservation)
– Default gateway
– (optional) DNS Servers
– (optional) IPv6
– SNTP network time servers
Now the appliance is configured and can be used for initial configuration and discovery.
Firmware repository
The Oneview appliance ships with a default SPP (Service Pack for Proliant) that contains the necessary firmware to successfully import and manage an enclosure. If you want to use a more recent SPP, select the Top Level Menu and navigate to Firmware Bundles under General.
Examine the default SPP baseline.
If you wish to upload an alternate SPP Bundle, clicking the +Add Firmware Bundle button will display the Add Firmware Bundle screen. Click on the Choose File button, and select the SPP ISO to upload. Once selected, click the Start Upload button. You can also drag-and drop firmware bundles (SPPs) within Windows environments. You can navigate away from the Firmware Bundle screen to other areas within the UI, as the upload process is a background procress within the browser.
The SPP upload will being. You can click the blue Close button in the lower right, as that will only close the dialog box and not cancel the upload.
Note
Do not close the browser window until the Firmware Upload task has completed. You can click on the Close button in the Add Firmware Bundle dialog as the upload is a background thread within the web application.
Licensing
HP OneView licensing is designed to be simplified, with the license typically embedded within the iLO or Onboard Administrator when ordered with Factory Express, CTO or BTO. Please refer to the HP OneView Quickspecs for all possible licensing options.
HP OneView also has a builtin eval license that provides customers with 60-days. During this eval period, HP OneView will not enable iLO Advanced features or functionality. The ILO Advanced license (trial or retail) is also required for server and enclosure power and performance monitoring.
If you have received a license key, the appliance Settings section provides the method of adding licenses to the internal pool. The following steps outline that process.
Select the Top Level Menu and navigate to Settings under Facilities
Under the Actions Menu you will find the option Add License.
